Picking the right stump grinder should be easy and soon you'll be grinding stumps and clearing land in no time

This article covers:

    • The basics of PTO stump grinders
    • Features of stump grinding technology
    • How to choose the best PTO stump grinder for you

When it comes to stump removal, a stump grinder is a basic but incredibly important tool for your lawn or property maintenance needs.

But there are a few different types of stump grinders, and it's worth explaining how a stump grinder works, how it grinds away stumps and the components that make it function.

And in the end, you can figure out which model of PTO-driven stump grinder you need to get rid of stumps on your property.

PTO-driven grinding power

One of the most important things to understand about stump grinders is how they function. While there are manually pushed stump grinders, PTO powered machines may be a more efficient use of your time and energy.

Most tractors have a Power Take Off (PTO) which can be used to power specific machinery. Woodland Mills' stump grinders are powered by the PTO, meaning you will need a tractor with the appropriate horsepower required to run the machine.

The input speed from your tractor to the PTO and horsepower is important for determining which model of stump grinder you need, but we'll get to the specifics a bit further down this article.

While some rural farmstead owners are likely to have big tractors with a PTO, some people may not need that and instead opt for a compact tractor. Regardless, make sure your tractor has a PTO and that it has the appropriate horsepower.

PTO-driven stump grinders are powered by connecting a PTO shaft from the tractor PTO to the stump grinder. That PTO shaft then transfers the power required from the tractor to operate the stump grinder.

Now when you turn on your tractor's PTO, the shaft will spin and turn the flywheel on the stump grinder, allowing you to make quick work of stumps.

Heavy-duty steel flywheel and carbide teeth

So how does the machine get rid of stumps and take out the roots?

The solid steel flywheel spins, powered by your tractor's PTO. Once it's spinning, the tungsten carbide cutting teeth on the wheel dig into the stump and chew off little pieces with each rotation. These teeth will gradually cut away the stump as you drive your tractor back and forth and lowering the grinding wheel with each pass.

The teeth are strategically placed around the blade for high performance, to swiftly sheer off large amounts of wood debris and delete stumps. Your tractor's PTO power should be more than enough to spin the flywheel and generate enough wheel speed to get rid of the stump once and for all.

The carbide teeth are sturdy and can remove stumps with ease. Once you've reached the maximum cutting depth with your PTO stump grinder, and you've gotten rid of the roots below ground level, you have successfully taken care of your stump.

Stump grinders:

    • Efficiently remove stumps
    • Leave a satisfying hole in the ground which can be filled and landscaped
    • Are a great tool for cleaning up the apperance of your property
    • Can be used repeatedly for ongoing property maintenance
  •

How many stumps can you take out with a PTO stump grinder? As many as you need, as these rugged machines can chew through dozens of stumps. Many in the Woodland Mills Facebook community run their stump grinders for their small businesses, offering to get rid of clients' stumps and generate a small profit on each job, thus recouping the cost of their stump grinder.
