From Raw Land to an Off-Grid Dream: Rod’s Story with the HM126
When Rod Gajeske and his wife purchased 22 acres of raw, undisturbed land in Georgia in 2019, Rod had a vision for retirement: to build a self-sufficient, off-grid property where they could create a life of their own.
But before they could bring that vision to life, Rod had to decide what to do with the many pine trees covering his undeveloped land. He didn't see a nuisance, he saw land value.
Rather than paying someone to take down the trees, Rod began researching sawmills. He wanted to turn the timber on his property into something useful, from outbuildings and animal shelters to the custom home he eventually plans to build.
“Store bought lumber is like balsa wood compared to my southern yellow pine,” he explained.
After comparing his options, he came across Woodland Mills and found what he believed was the best combination of price, quality and capability.
Finding the Right Sawmill for the Job
After considering the size of the trees on his property and the projects he wanted to tackle, he purchased the Woodland Mills HM126 with an additional track extension and 14 hp Kohler engine.
Since ordering his HM126, Rod has used it to build two dog houses and a rooster coop after one particularly troublesome rooster wouldn't leave his turkey hens alone.
Beyond the spaces for his animals, Rod has bigger plans for the lumber coming off his mill.
For Rod, the appeal of milling his own lumber goes beyond simply having materials available. It's about knowing where the wood came from and being involved in every step of the process.
He wants to experience the satisfaction of felling a tree, milling the log and using the resulting lumber to build something himself.
That philosophy will play a major role in the custom home he plans to begin building in 2027, along with the timber-frame-style mezzanine he hopes to construct at the back of his 60-by-80-foot shop.
Building Toward an Off-Grid Future
Rod's sawmill is also helping with another major project: creating an adjustable solar panel array to power the property.

His plans call for 48 solar panels, which will work with two inverters to provide more than 13 kilowatts of power. The system is intended to supply electricity to the future home, guest cabin, workshop and well pump, with the possibility of adding another cabin down the road.
One challenge is getting the most out of the solar panels throughout the year.
To maximize the system's potential, Rod and his wife decided to build their own adjustable solar array frame rather than settle for a fixed angle.
The HM126 is helping him mill the lumber needed for the project, bringing another part of their off-grid vision closer to reality.
Once the array is installed, Rod plans to set up a dedicated power shed for the batteries and inverters, trench the electrical lines to the workshop and well pump, and continue developing the property.
With so many projects on the go, having the ability to produce his own lumber gives Rod more control over the materials he needs and the freedom to keep building at his own pace.
Getting More from the HM126 with the RS30 PRO
As with any piece of equipment, getting the most out of a sawmill comes down to having the right setup and tools.
Soon after getting his mill properly set up, Rod began making greater use of the Woodland Mills RS30 PRO Blade Sharpener, which he had bought several years after his initial sawmill purchase.
“When cutting with a dull blade it's hard on both the mill and the blade. Now I just take the blade off, walk it over to the RS30 PRO and sharpen it, throw it back on and it's like cutting butter again,” he said.
A Sawmill That Leaves Room to Grow
For someone just getting started with sawmilling, it can be difficult to know exactly where the hobby or project will lead.
Rod believes the HM126 is a great option for those who are still discovering what's possible.
“The HM126 is a great mill especially for someone just starting out and doesn't really know where a mill could take him (or her),” he said. “It can do all the beginning jobs and give you plenty of room to grow.”
That room to grow has certainly been important for Rod. What began as a way to make use of the trees on his property has expanded into a long list of projects, from animal shelters and solar infrastructure to the lumber he plans to use for his future home.

He also had a positive experience with Woodland Mills' customer service. When the clutch on his sawmill failed, he left a voicemail on a Saturday afternoon explaining the issue. The following week, a replacement clutch arrived at his door.
“That is what you call customer service!” he exclaimed.
The Next Chapter
With his solar array, workshop improvements, timber-frame mezzanine and custom home still ahead of him, Rod has no shortage of projects to keep his sawmill busy.
With 22 acres of trees at his disposal, there's no shortage of raw material to work with.
What started as a dream has become an opportunity to turn simple pine trees into something far more valuable: the building blocks of the life Rod and his wife envisioned when they purchased the vacant land in 2019.
