Each Woodland Mills sawmill is built for a specific log diameter, so we recommend a simple rule of thumb: choose a mill that can handle about 20% more than the largest logs in your pile. For example, if you regularly work with 26" logs, the HM130MAX — with a 30" capacity — is the practical choice. That extra room makes log positioning easier and gives you the ability to handle the occasional larger log in the future. 

You can always run smaller logs on a bigger mill, but trying to squeeze oversized logs onto a smaller mill? That’s a tougher game. Best to play it safe - you never know what might roll into your lot.

A larger engine will cut faster, but it doesn’t change the size of logs you can mill. If you’re willing to trade some cutting speed for upfront savings, a smaller engine can be a smart choice. Cutting capacity, however, is fixed, so choose a mill that matches the size of logs you plan to work with.

A blade sharpener is also something you may want to consider as it can extend the life of your blade and ensure you're never without a sharp blade. Blades can typically be sharpened up to 5 times, essentially turning 1 blade into 5 blades. This math often makes sense for most sawyers.

The HM Series is better suited for sawyers looking to generate income or support small-scale commercial use. Many of our customers use HM mills for side-hustles or small businesses, from producing slabs and lumber to offering mobile milling services with a trailer-mounted setup. HM models also include additional features and accessories that make frequent or all-day milling faster, smoother, and more efficient.

In terms of timing, if you’re working solo and comfortable with tools it will take about a day to finish, but extra hands will help speed up the process. If you're building your sawmill on our Woodlander trailer, it will take about two days total before you're ready to start milling.
