Looking at the Best Large Wood Chippers for Farmers and Large Property Owners

Looking for a way to turn large brush and a high volume of branches into wood chips? Here's a few great options

Owners of forested land often have significant tree cleanup, requiring heavy duty machines that can handle a high volume of wood waste.

Whether you're planning seasonal cleanup or routine land maintenance, there are some great wood chippers on the market which can meet your needs.

When you have a large amount of yard waste you need a serious machine that can get the job done. Here are our suggestions for what type of machinery you need for your next cleanup job:

What is a wood chipper?

A wood chipper is a powerful piece of heavy equipment designed to transform bulky wood waste into manageable wood chips. Essential for land clearing, landscaping, and brush removal, wood chippers help property owners and forestry professionals efficiently process branches, limbs, and other wood debris.

These machines use a feed system to pull wood into a cutting mechanism that chops the material into chips. The resulting wood chips can be used for mulch, compost, or easy disposal, making wood chippers a vital tool for anyone managing large amounts of brush or wood waste.

Available in a range of sizes and configurations, these machines are engineered to handle everything from small twigs to substantial branches, streamlining cleanup and supporting sustainable land management.

What type of wood chipper do I need?

There are many different types of wood chippers on the market catered to a variety of needs. Some are meant for lighter wood chipping jobs while others are meant for larger branches and more routine chipping. Many can produce high quality chips for use in your garden or landscaping.

Here’s the rundown on some of the different wood chipper types:

    • Electric Chippers: An electric chipper runs on a battery or AC cord and is a smaller, lighter model intended for light chipping jobs. Most electric chippers typically max out at around 1.5 inches in diameter for branch processing, making them ideal for yard cleanup and convenience, but not suitable for larger branches. For large property owners and those who need heavy duty chippers, they’re better off with other models.

    • Gas-Powered Chippers: These models utilize their own engine to power a flywheel or drum containing chipping blades to do the chipping, models like the Woodland Mills TFG55 GAS. These models tend to be great for small-to-mid sized branches, handling up to 3 inches in diameter. While there are great gas-powered chippers, for those looking for large models there are better options.

    • PTO-Driven Chippers: These wood chippers use the power of your tractor’s engine, delivered through the PTO. This system requires you only maintain one engine, your tractor’s, and you can get a chipper that makes the most of your engine’s horsepower. The more powerful the engine, the more powerful the chipper you can use with it.

For farmers and landowners with large tractors with powerful engines, the best option would be a PTO-powered wood chipper that makes the most of the engine’s horsepower.

What size of wood chipper should I get for my tractor?

With many different models available, it may be confusing to know which wood chipper to get for your tractor.

In general, you should always get the tractor that makes the most of your tractor's horsepower.

That means you should get the largest model that can handle that horsepower. This ensures your wood chipper capitalizes on the horsepower of your tractor and that it can handle the largest branches you're able to feed it.

For example: For a tractor with 50 HP at the PTO, while both the TF68 PRO (compatibility of 20-50 HP) and the TF810 PRO (compatibility of 35-100+ HP) are both compatible, you'd be better off getting the TF810 PRO, provided your tractor is large enough to lift it.

What are the benefits of having a larger wood chipper?

Large land clearing jobs require a wood chipper with heavy duty construction, able to handle the toughest branches. Large chippers like the TF810 PRO also feature hydraulic infeed, with enough pulling power to draw in large and difficult branches on its own.

Not only is getting the largest wood chipper on offer make it easier to chip large branches, but it creates a larger opening for drawing in small branches too. That will make it easier for branches with lots of off-shoots that are more difficult to handle.

The feed system ensures a smooth operation, and the adjustable discharge chute throws chips wherever you want them, whether that's in the brush, into the back of an ATV trailer or in your garden.

What's the difference between a regular and PRO wood chipper?

Woodland Mills offers two types of wood chippers, our WC series which offers single flywheel chipping, and the PRO series which features patented Twin Flywheel Technology.

Twin Flywheel separates the actions of chipping and throwing. One flywheel is dedicated to chipping the material and the other to spins at 2x the speed to throw materials out faster and farther. This also significantly increases the air flow, which helps carry difficult lightweight, wet, leafy, and coniferous material smoothly through the chip stream, reducing potential build-up.

What is the best large wood chipper for a large acreage owner or farmer?

If you need heavy equipment that's highly productive and can turn your branch piles into a stack of wood chips, giving you smaller debris to manage, here are some suggestions:

1. Woodland Mills TF810 PRO Wood Chipper

The Woodland Mills TF810 PRO Wood Chipper equipped to a tractor, turning tree limbs into wood chips.

The TF810 PRO was the first Woodland Mills wood chipper to feature patented Twin Flywheel Technology, which hundreds of acreage owners have experienced the benefits of. The TF810 PRO is the largest-capacity wood chipper in the lineup, weighing in at an impressive 1,000 lb., a testament to its robust steel design.

Specs:

    • 8" chipping diameter

    • PTO HP range of 35-100+

    • Hydraulic infeed system

    • Patented Twin Flywheel Technology

2. Woodland Mills WC88 Wood Chipper

The WC88 is Woodland Mills' oldest PTO wood chipper model, designed, engineered, and launched in 2008 by the company's co-founders and early engineering team. From the start, the WC88 was built to be the only chipper a landowner would ever need, striking the perfect balance between value and capacity. The WC88 is considered by many landowners to be the best balance of value and capacity, though it's generally recommend it for larger HP tractors.

Specs:

    • 8" chipping diameter

    • PTO HP range of 35-100+

    • Hydraulic infeed system

What wood chipper do I get if I need a high production of wood chips?

Many arborists, tree care companies and more require large wood chippers capable of turning a high volume of branches into wood chips. That's because, doing chipping commercially, they're putting a much higher quantity of branches through their machines.

With regular maintenance, a large wood chipper like the TF810 PRO would be well suited for a small tree care company or arborist who is capable of transporting their tractor to the customer's property. Couple this with stump grinding services, capable of being delivered by a PTO stump grinder, and you can offer a full service experience for your customers.
